Hello all!
January has zoomed by for me... probably because I was playing “catch-up” from the holidays. I finished MVP nominations for the quarter (welcome to our newcomers!), went to the Mid-West Regional Summit, and starting thinking hard about the Global Summit in April. Some of this is listed below and some will be coming in future communication. My usual verbose self outdone itself this time around so I strongly recommend the outline as a guide to today’s topics:

Welcome one and all! I will be sending another letter for our new MVPs to handle all the welcome-to-program topics and covering some of its official and unofficial benefits. I think this document is long enough without adding all that to it and boring the rest of you to tears. (It also buys me some time to write it <smile>
.
Need Some Approvals from All of You
===================================
As a Microsoft MVP, your personal information is currently only available to administrative MVP Program personnel and me, your MVP lead. If I get a request for information, I usually end up contacting you and then feedback the results to them. It not perfect or timely so I’d like streamline the process a bit and try to get your permission in advance of some of these requests. Current purposes for sharing contact info are
- Let Regional MVP Leads contact those of you in their areas for local events. This is important for those of you in the UK, Canada, Australia and other countries with a local MVP Lead.
- Enable Product Group members who traveling in your area to contact you while they are in the vicinity.
So, the here’s the question I need all of you to answer in the next few days:
Is it okay to share your contact information with other Microsoft employees for the purposes of local contact? Yes or No?
Please let me know in the next few days as I holding off these requests until I hear from you.
Best Wishes to Ron Martell
==========================
Ron Martell underwent major surgery today. For those of you who don’t know Ron, he is a long-time MVP who has been helping folks in the Windows 9x space. If you would like more information or to share your best wishes, contact Ron Badour at rbadour@satx.rr.com
Looking for Mikhail Zhilin
==========================
Once a year, I seem to have somebody drop off my radar and I can’t seem to reach them. This year, its Mikhail’s turn. He is not responding to the emails I have sent to him. If anyone has a connection with him, please tell him to contact me. Many thanks!
Rumors of the Windy City are true – Chicago Summit Report =========================================================
The warm reception we got from MVPs at the W City Center Hotel didn’t prepare us for the icy blasts of wind down the Chicago River a few blocks from the hotel. IT was BONECHILLINGLY COLD, especially Sunday morning when I was catching the Blue Train back to O’Hare International Airport and home. On Saturday, we talked about Automated Deployment Systems, Longhorn, The MVP Program, Visual Studio Tools for Office and Whidbey. I was able to connect a lot with Alan Levy and a bit with Bob Lin. It also gave me a few ideas for newsletter topics, especially on Longhorn.
While we will be repeating some content in Dallas this month, specific topics can and do change. See the Dallas Summit under Events for more detail.
Global Summit update
====================
Summit details are in progress. The preregistration site is still up at https://microsoft.crgevents.com/mvp04/Default.asp so I encourage you to visit and show your interest in attending. We had over 700 people last summit and expect about double that amount this time. Here are the particulars at the moment:
Date: April 4-7, 2004
Location: You maxed out the largest room in the Microsoft Conference Center in Redmond last time so we are moving some parts of the summit to the Washington State Convention & Trade Center in downtown Seattle –
We will have a registration and information site up very soon spell logistical details out but here’s my sketch of the proceedings:
Sunday, April 4th – Welcome Reception & Registration - The goal for Sunday afternoon and early evening is to get everybody registered and set up for the next few days. We are also planning to provide a way for product teams who are interested in connecting with MVPs to do so during this time.
Monday, April 5th – MVP & Product Group Day 1 - this is a for your do learn about your overall platform with product team. For us, this would be Windows. Since we are in the throes of Longhorn development, it’s likely that the new OS will be the key topic of the day.
Tuesday, April 6th – Microsoft Executive Speaker Day - There are a lot of Microsoft Executives who are lining up to chat with you. In order to accommodate both you and them, we will be at the Washington State Convention Center.
Wednesday, April 7th – MVP & Product Group Day 2 – Back to Redmond and a “deep-dive” day into your technology area with the particular product team. I will be connecting more with you in the next month to so make sure we are covering areas that work for you.
As far as evening activities, Wednesday is the MVP party plus will be probably some individual events happening on Monday night. The official summit information site will be up very soon and is expected to fill in more detail. Stay tuned!
Changes in IE coming
====================
In a rather unusual move, we released a notice Monday about an upcoming change in Internet Explorer that removes support for handling user names and passwords in HTTP and HTTPS URLs using the format:
http
://username
assword@server/resource.ext
The reason for disabling the feature to prevent malicious use of a feature that is not widely used. However, it could create problems on some websites. I recommend you review http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=834489 for details on this.
Longhorn’s Big Bet: WinFS
=========================
In the last two Regional MVP Summits, the presentation on Longhorn has generated a lot of interest and a lot of questions. I know because I was the official notetaker in Chicago and logged over 50 questions in the 90 minutes devoted to Longhorn. Most of the questions centered on the new file system we are proposing for Longhorn, code-named WinFS (http://msdn.microsoft.com/Longhorn/understanding/pillars/WinFS/default.aspx)
A New Way of Thinking About Storage
-----------------------------------
For folks used to dealing with a hierarchical file folder metaphor, moving to file system based on relational database design is very disorienting. For years, our key to file organization has been “location, location, location” I don’t know about you but my file structure for documents is huge and I am highly dependent on it. To be told that with WinFS, location doesn’t matter is a major paradigm shift. It’s clear from the summit discussions that I am not the only one grappling with it. So, the following is my attempt to explain the idea of WinFS to you and, through the process, to understand it myself.
First, why do we need a solution like WinFS? What’s the point? Well, have you looked at you huge file folder structure in My Documents lately? I was coping pretty well until I got a digital camera, starting working with video, and organizing my music collection on my PC. What tipped it totally on its side was when I started collecting as part of a genealogy project, birth, death, marriage, and census records. It made my brain tired trying to file all this data and remember where it was. I had to build internal indexes of files to keep it all straight. Since the last time I felt this way was dealing with 8.3 filename limitations in MSDOS, maybe it is time for a new system.
On Top of NTFS
--------------
Just to lay this out, WinFS actually isn’t the base file system. That is NTFS. WinFS Storage actually communicates through NTFS to the drives. The way to visualize this is that the WinFS is essentially a database file on the NTFS. This leverages the reliability and security of the current file system. Of course, WinFS itself is more than just a database file.
Keywords and Attributes are King
--------------------------------
With the WinFS relational model, keywords and attributes matter for locating and using files. Basic File attributes has been around for a while but this takes it to new level where different types of files can have different attributes. This makes sense; a photograph is better identifiable through people in the picture, scene location, and occasion than the modification date and title that a text document would need. This flexibility is what WinFS provides. The new storage metaphor is more how you might describe a person than a file folder. Describing people includes keys to appearance (build, hair and eye color, distinguishing marks), common interests, or activities.
The Possibilities
-----------------
With flexibility of this model, the ability of storing information beyond traditional documents is possible. Email messages, contact, as well as standard documents can be stored natively in the system and associated with a person. Files are more like (to use terminology from Microsoft Outlook) items tied together with common attributes.
But What about...?
------------------
Ok, out of the clouds now...what about my old applications, or file access to this nebulous cloud of data? At the Summits, these are the hard questions you are asking.
App Compatibility – With applications that use Windows components like the common dialog to load and save files, this should not be a problem. Since the application is not directly accessing the file but using a function of Windows to do so, it will continue to function fine. Its gets more complicated the closer the relationship between the file and application gets.
For applications that use custom dialogs to retrieve files, success will depend on whether they are using APIs for file access. If they are they will probably be fine as well though the enhanced search and grouping features provided by the API set for WinFS won’t be available. To get that, app makers will need to make changes for use a new API set called WinFX. I know that doesn’t cover all application.
Disk utilities without some awareness of WinFS will probably be the least successful and understandably so.
Networking Access – There been a concern this approach could be a problem in sharing files. Selecting files or groups of files to share actually gets easier and less artificial (no more creating folders specifically for sharing). You can share photos based on common attributes, for instance. The external experience is still connecting or sharing via a virtual path similar to the way sharing is done with current OSes.
What the overhead on maintaining all this structure? Well right now in the product cycle, file access is slow. A big priority is to improve speed of access to a much more acceptable level by beta testing time.
More on WinFS
-------------
I just scratched the surface of this topic and I know I have a lot more to learn. Right now, understanding WinFS means skimming developer documentation for how things work and playing with the product under difference circumstances. Even though this is very early in the development process, I encourage you to do that if you can. Check out http://longhorn.msdn.microsoft.com/lhsdk/winfs/daovrwhatiswinfs.aspx as one place to start on information and, if you have MSDN, explore the MSDN copy on Longhorn on a non-critical system.
How MS works (MVP Program)
==========================
More than one of you has put this question to me, especially folks that have been around the MVP program for a while. You used to be able to count the folks running the MVP Program on one hand but as the program has grown, we are now more than a handful<smile>.
Change Is a Constant
--------------------
How we are organized has also changed a number of time as the team has matured and improved how to do things. That is the Microsoft way; to refine and shape as the business needs dictate. With the goal of becoming for more professional delivering awards, staging the events, and making connections, we’ve added people, distributed responsibilities, and changed our internal processes a few times. I’m sure that, from the outside, a lot of this is just a blur as people shift responsibilities, and move in and out of roles. Microsoft has always encouraged the movement of people within the company and I doubt that will change.
Okay, that was a long disclaimer to the fact that the team’s organization should be viewed as rooted in sand with 60% chance of occasional wind gusts <grin>. I guess I should just launch into it before we change again < big grin>.
Starting at the Top
-------------------
Leading the effort is our globe trotting director, Sean O’Dricoll. Reporting to Sean is Anthony Russell’s MVP Program Management Team. These are the folks that manage the award process, secure web site, and mvpga@microsoft.com.
Mvpga has been and continues to be Janni Clark’s province. Janni has been a fixture of the MVP program for many years. I am happy to report she has returned from leave and is getting back up to speed. Tony Hynes, another familiar face for many, oversees the awards process and events. Corey Hermann, the guy dressed as the MSN butterfly at the last summit, handles our web sites. New folks include Mark Edujee, who recently headed the MVP survey and crunches numbers for us and Amber Hancock, who will be guiding how the MVP brand will be promoted and positioned within Microsoft and in the rest of the world.
Besides MVP Program Management
------------------------------
Outside this of this key organization are the MVP Leads themselves. We are organized by region roughly divided into the Americas, Europe, Asia-Pacific, etc. Reporting to Sean for the Americas (my group) is Ricardo Wenger. Ricardo has both MVP Leads and Community Program Managers under different product technology areas for Windows, Office, etc.
Eyes glazed over yet? <smile>. Since I’ve been both a Community Program Manager and an MVP Lead, I’ll be happy to explain these roles...next time.

Brian’s Favorite Webcast Awards for February
--------------------------------------------
The Golden Globes are now history and the Academy Awards are on the horizon. With all this “award fever”, I couldn’t help but pass out a few awards of my own. All opinions (and award titles) are strictly mine though everything else is real and watchable in Feburary.

The typical misconception is that a hardware firewall will prevent a security breach. In fact, the majority of today’s IT security breaches occur through a web application. In this webcast we will discuss the most pervasive methods that hackers use to penetrate systems, where these attacks originate from, how they are accomplished and the financial impact of these breaches. Developers and managers should plan on attending to obtain a clear understanding of the challenges they may face in securing our web applications.

Have you ever wondered if those pesky network-savvy individuals that are in possession of packet-sniffing software such as Snort or Ethereal might be eavesdropping on your Instant Messenger (IM) conversations? Of course, even though we all use IM in the workplace, you might not want your chat conversations going out in plain-text over the wire. In this webcast we will write a secure peer-to-peer chat program that cannot be eavesdropped by packet-sniffers. Experienced developers shouldn’t miss the discussions covering remoting, encryption, streaming and multi-threading.
Speaking of Webcasts...
-----------------------
The first major “day” in February is Groundhog Day on Monday, February 2nd. That’s when “Punxsutawney Phil” the groundhog popularized in Bill Murray’s film “GroundHog Day” will poke his nose out of Gobbler Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania and, by his actions, predict whether there will be six more weeks of winter or not. Naturally, webcasting will play a part on Monday morning when the grand event can be watched from three different angles. To watch or learn more about this day, see

Oops...back to awards again...
That’s more than enough from me. Thanks for being there and doing what you do. I’ll do this again next month too, but in a shorter form... I promise... really!

Deploying Live Communication Server 2003
http://msevents.microsoft.com/CUI/EventDetail.aspx?EventID=1032243224&Culture=en-US
Real-Time Communications (RTC) is quickly becoming a major strategic asset.
It is also becoming a major liability with widespread unsupported use,
limited security, and no centralized management. As part of the Microsoft?
Exchange 2000 Server offering, Microsoft provided customers with one of the
first centrally managed enterprise instant message (IM) services available.
Although it answered initial real-time communication needs, its early
release into an emerging industry with no standards meant Exchange IM was
based on a proprietary communications protocol of limited use and
compatibility. In March of 2003, Microsoft released Microsoft?Office Live
Communications Server 2003 (LCS) and deployed it internally. Live
Communications Server is based on an industry-standard protocol and enhanced
with features that help make it secure, extensible, and interoperable with
many types of applications. Join us as we take a look into how Microsoft's
Operations and Technology Group (OTG) deployed LCS across the enterprise
along. Gain from their experience as they share the benefits realized and
lessons learned along the way.

?
mvpaward.com的目的是什么?

?
